One of the famous Hindi Poem from Bachchan's great collection. by Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan, HarivanshRai Bachchan was a distinguished Hindi poet of Chhayavaad literarymovement (romantic upsurge) of early 20th century Hindi literature. Heis best known for his early work Madhushala. He is also the father ofBollywood superstar, Amitabh Bachchan.


Bachchan is best knownfor his early lyric poems Madhushala (The House of Wine), firstpublished in 1935, social unity was the running theme of his greatestpoetry collection. Madhushala brought instant fame. It whipped up aliterary frenzy when he recited it to huge audiences. It has beenchoreographed, and performed on stage. It was one the first pieces ofHindi poetry that was set to music, with its best selling cassettes andCDs having appeal across generations. It was later translated intoEnglish and many regional Indian languages including Bengali, Marathiand Malayalam. It forms part of a trilogy, along with Madhubala (1936)and Madhukalash (1937).


His works include Nisha Nimantran, KhadiKe Phool, Ekant Sangeet and Satrangini. In November, 1984, he wrote hislast poem Ek November 1984 on Indira Gandhi’s assassination. Though notofficially, he is considered in literary circles in India as the lastRashtriya Kavi (National Poet). His rendition of Madhushala wasbroadcast on All India Radio and is still available.


His public readings were attended by hundreds of people. Hisautobiography, consisting of four volumes namely Kya bhooloon kya yaadkaroon, Need ka nirmaan fir, Basere se door and Dashdwaar se sopaan tak(abridged and translated into English as In the Afternoon of Time) waschosen for the Saraswati Samman.


He published about 30 volumesof poetry. He translated Shakespeare's Macbeth and Othello, OmarKhayyam's Rubaiyat, the Bhagavad Gita and W.B. Yeats into Hindi.

Bachchan'sgreat collection, 'Madhushala', is often thought to be a great admirerof wonder solutions himself. It is wrongly believed that the creator ofone of the most famous poems on wine (Madhushala), never drank liquor.In fact, he had never drank liquor till he completed Madhushala. Hestarted drinking, although sparingly, later in his life, a fact that headmits to in his autobiography.
